Day assessment unit referral process

The day assessment unit is an outpatient clinic for people who need increased maternal or fetal surveillance or treatment. It is run by midwives in collaboration with the relevant obstetric team or private obstetrician.

Day assessment unit hours are Monday to Friday 7am to 3:30pm.

Inpatient admission to the day assessment unit may be considered when outpatient services cannot meet the needs of the patient, and they need 24-hour care.

Clinical indications for a referral

The unit provides a service for women with the following obstetric indications:

  • GPH
  • small for gestational age
  • intrauterine growth restriction
  • breech assessment and external cephalic version
  • cholestasis
  • prolonged premature rupture of membranes
  • postdates via virtual consult system
  • other noted post-term surveillance requirements
  • iron infusion
  • diabetes as an indication for increased surveillance with clear plan of follow
  • liquor abnormalities
  • multiple pregnancies
  • increased monitoring for previous still births.

How to refer to the day assessment unit

In an emergency, call the day assessment unit for a consultation and admission directly to the unit.

  1. All woman needing an obstetric review for one of these conditions must have a comprehensive referral sent by their LMC to the community clinic at Greenlane (09 630 9781). Please ensure woman’s details, LMC and contact persons details are included and correct.
  2. After this visit, the obstetrician will write the management plan prior to making the appointment with DAU. The risk sheet will be updated on Healthware.
  3. The clinic will contact the referring LMC by phone or by letter.
  4. The electronic or written referral from clinic will be faxed or emailed to DAU with a follow-up phone call to make the initial appointment time.
  5. All patients will have an electronic discharge summary sent after review via Healthware.
  6. The exception are women with a breech presentation requiring an ECV when a midwife may refer directly to the unit.

If a woman with a breech presentation needs an ECV their midwife may refer them directly to the day assessment unit.
