Nurse practitioner
Mātanga tapuhi nurse practitioners are highly skilled, autonomous, health practitioners who have advanced education, clinical training and demonstrated competency. They hold a clinical master’s degree and have legal authority to practice beyond the level of a registered nurse.
Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme
The Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme offers tailored, wraparound support to registered nurses on the pathway to nurse practitioner and their employers throughout practicum papers and post nurse practitioner registration transition. Support includes mentoring, pastoral care, clinical placement coordination, employer engagement, and structured assistance to embed the nurse practitioner role safely.
The Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme will be delivered in partnership with accredited education providers and will be available to 180 registered nurses annually — with 120 places allocated to those in primary and community care, and 60 for nurses in specialist areas such as mental health and emergency departments.
Elements supported within the scheme:
- tertiary education costs
- mentoring/preceptorship support
- travel
- study time/study release
- clinical supervision
- funding for employee backfill.

How to apply for the Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme
The Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme will be delivered by a consortium of six primary health organisations – Tū Ora Compass Health, ProCare, Pinnacle, Pegasus, Wellsouth and Mahi Tahi Haoura. The Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme is open to registered nurses undertaking relevant Master’s degrees working in any health setting across the motu, including community, primary and secondary care.
