Reducing the risk of mpox transmission
Mpox is a viral disease that can be transmitted by close contact with skin lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials.
Mpox is zoonotic, which means it can pass between animals and humans.
Typically, a person with mpox is infectious and can pass the virus on to others from when they first develop symptoms until their lesions or scab’s crust, dry or fall off.
Infection prevention and control measures can reduce the risk of transmission of mpox.
The measures include isolation, hand hygiene, appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning, and management of laundry and rubbish.
Mpox has the potential to pass between animals and humans, although this is extremely rare.
