Te Puna — the new online breast screening system has replaced the current 8 systems with a single nationwide system.

There are around 135,000 women across Aotearoa who are currently eligible and not participating in breast screening. Te Puna will help more women to access breast screening, by automatically inviting them to enrol in the programme when they are eligible, shifting from an opt in to an opt out enrolment approach. Reaching more women will significantly increase screening coverage and the detection of breast cancer earlier.

Te Puna* will move Breastscreen Aotearoa from paper-based to digital assessments. This means improved reliability, functionality and usability. It also means much better tracking of participants, improved data and reporting.

*The name of the new system - Te Puna, translates to ‘the spring’ and was gifted to the programme to reflect the purpose of the BreastScreen Aotearoa programme to protect the life and health of wāhine.

Te Puna is live across Aotearoa New Zealand

Since February 2025, our new national breast screening system — Te Puna, has been rolling out and is now live nationwide.

Women are now able to enrol, book, or change an appointment online. The new system will send a secure personalised link or QR code by email, text or letter when women become eligible or are due for a screen.

*For women living in the Nelson Marlborough region the age extension will also apply.

Access to Te Puna for women is free

Access to Te Puna for women will be free through an initiative called Zero Data, which provides free access to several health websites.

Women will not incur mobile charges or require having data on their mobiles when they access the site through the secure personalised link.
