The demand for all diagnostic tests is continuing to grow, both here and internationally. More than 2.5m radiology events are delivered each year in New Zealand.
The Diagnostic Dashboard shows wait times for the past 3 years by region and district for the following diagnostic procedures:
- Colonoscopies (Bowel Diagnostic)
- Computerised Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) scans
- Angiograms (type of heart scan)
Publishing this information provides a baseline as Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora works to reduce wait times.
Improving access to diagnostic tests means more patients are diagnosed to get the care they need sooner, which saves lives.
Faster access to diagnostic tests supports government Health Targets - shorter wait times in EDs, shorter wait times for first specialist appointments, shorter wait times for treatment, and faster access to cancer treatment.
Increased investment of $65m in 2025-2026 will enable an additional 74,950 diagnostic procedures and other improvements – the start of a multi-year improvement programme.
Health NZ is investing in its workforces, digital systems and technology, and strengthening relationships with the private providers that support our communities.
More information on the data
Note that our national radiology dataset is in development and information will be updated in the near future.
This is the first national dataset on radiology service delivery ever operated in New Zealand and will provide critical information to improving outcomes for our patients.
Until then, only data up to January 2025 is available for general radiology.
