The Sawmill Workers’ Service and the Dioxin Health Service

Two health services managed by Health New Zealand are:

  • The Sawmill Workers’ Service – a service for sawmill workers exposed to pentachlorophenol (PCP) in Aotearoa New Zealand between the 1950s and 1980s, and
  • The Dioxin Health Service – a service for people exposed to dioxins from the former Ivon Watkins Dow (IWD) factory in Paritutu, New Plymouth between 1962 and 1987.

Both services involve a government funded annual health check for those who are eligible.

Information and relevant documents for both services are provided below for:

  • People who want to apply for the services, and
  • Health professionals who deliver the services, including the health checks.
  • Sawmill Workers’ Service

The Sawmill Workers’ Service is designed to assess the health needs of former sawmill workers who were exposed to pentachlorophenol (PCP) at sawmills during 1950s to 1980s, and to help them access services to support their wellness.
  • Dioxin Health Service

If you were exposed to dioxin from the former Ivon Watkins Dow (IWD) factory in Paritutu, New Plymouth, you may be eligible for the Dioxin Health Service.
