Kia Ora Hauora workforce development programme

Kia Ora Hauora is an innovative Māori health workforce development programme. Kia Ora Hauora seeks to increase the overall number of Māori working in the health and disability sector by recruiting Māori into health career pathways.

Why Kia Ora Hauora is important

The health needs of New Zealanders are growing. Māori health needs are significantly higher. Developing the Māori health workforce to meet future Māori health service needs is one part of the solution to ensuring the quality of the New Zealand health system in the future.

Who Kia Ora Hauora targets

Kia ora Hauora focuses on 4 key groups:

  • Māori studying at secondary level
  • Māori studying at tertiary level
  • Māori considering a career change
  • Māori considering a return to the workforce.

What Kia Ora Hauora does

Kia Ora Hauora provides information resources and supports Māori to engage in health career study pathways.

Hauora Māori Training Fund

Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) works on initiatives aimed at developing a workforce capable of supporting the delivery of health targets. HWNZ and Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora are working together to provide training support and opportunities for the non-regulated workforce to develop formal competencies in their current roles, and develop their potential to move into other health sectors as relevant.

The Hauora Māori Training Fund is contracted to Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora's Māori Health Development Group in the Wellington region.

The training fund supports the non-regulated workforce to gain certificates, diplomas and graduate diplomas and the levels of training range from Levels 2 to 7* on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) framework. There are criteria and requirements for all applications to do Level 7* training. The outcome of these applications will be determined by HWNZ.

Degrees and master's papers are not eligible for funding support from the Hauora Māori Training Fund as other funding opportunities exist to support these training programmes.

Application criteria

Apply today if you:

  • are an employee of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora or a health or disability service that is funded by Health NZ
  • can demonstrate a commitment to, or competence in, Māori health
  • can whakapapa to and/or have cultural links with, te ao Māori and Māori communities
  • are a New Zealand citizen, or hold a New Zealand permanent residency permit

Funding support

The Hauora Māori Training Fund provides support with:

  • tuition fees*, through a tax invoice from the tertiary education provider
  • travel subsidy*, which should be clearly indicated on your application form — this subsidy is only available if you are required to travel more than 50km by road one-way from your usual place of work to the agreed compulsory training programme
  • accommodation subsidy*, which should be clearly indicated on your application form — this subsidy supports your cost for accommodation required at the agreed training programme location
  • backfill*, which is the reasonable and actual cost (per hour) of replacing you while you attend the compulsory aspects of your training programmes during your rostered working hours
  • course-related resources* for actual costs up to a maximum of $500 per trainee, and must be clearly indicated on your application form — this process requires the Hauora Māori Training Fund coordinator to purchase text book(s) on your behalf. You must provide a recommended reading list from your training provider, plus details of the bookstore.

*Conditions apply. Contact us for more information.
