These standards set the minimum requirements for anyone who provides BreastScreen Aotearoa (BSA) services. This includes all independent, lead, and subcontracted providers working in New Zealand’s national breast screening programme.

Breast screening can help find breast cancer early, reducing illness and deaths, and improving quality of life. However, it can also have costs and potential risks.

To reduce any harm, the National Screening Unit requires all BSA providers to follow the National Policy and Quality Standards (NPQS) and to have systems in place to make sure they keep meeting them. An external audit process checks that providers are following these standards.
