Pharmacy Whakamahere: Understanding the pharmacy needs of our population
Manatū Hauora - Ministry of Health consulted widely with consumer and whānau groups throughout Aotearoa during 2021 and 2022.
This report sets out the voices of Māori, Pasifika and tangata whaikaha and their experiences when accessing pharmacy services. This report captures suggestions for service improvements. It is important that consumers’ needs are prioritised when planning, commissioning and delivering pharmacy services. There is a chance that we can work together for service re-design to meet whānau’s expectations and to enhance the primary health care for the benefit of all New Zealanders.

Community Pharmacy Minor Ailments Service
This service was provided by community pharmacies to consult on a range of minor health conditions and supply medicines and treatment aids if clinically indicated. This initiative aimed to improve access for people who are unable to access care or afford care for these minor ailments.
Consistent with the health sector principle in section 7(e)(i) of the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2023, MAS also promotes people’s health and wellbeing by helping to prevent, reduce, or delay the onset of health needs.
