We welcome discussion from Intensive Care Senior Medical Officers about any adult patient with potentially reversible severe respiratory or cardiac failure.
If you are an Intensive Care Senior Medical Officer and would like to refer an adult patient for ECMO, please call 0800 23858 3266 to speak to the CVICU on-call consultant.

When a patient is accepted for ECMO, this checklist (external link) needs to be completed to assist the referring team with making the appropriate preparations prior to our retrieval team arriving.

Auckland City Hospital CVICU ECMO course
The Auckland CVICU ECMO Course is an intensive, hands-on training program designed for doctors and nurses across New Zealand. The course provides participants with comprehensive education on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) techniques. Attendees will gain practical experience through simulation and workshops, covering topics such as patient selection, cannulation, and management of ECMO patients.

The CVICU Nurse training course is a separate course designed specifically for CVICU nurses that covers the same topics with a key focus on day-to-day management.
