About the National Artificial Intelligence and Algorithm Expert Advisory Group

The National Artificial Intelligence and Algorithm Expert Advisory Group (NAIAEAG) has been established by Health NZ to provide guidance and endorsement for artificial intelligence (AI) projects and research involving the organisation. It provides oversight for researchers, developers, and Health NZ staff seeking to utilise Health NZ’s data for AI development or implementation of AI tools within Health NZ, ensuring alignment with ethical, technical, clinical, and operational standards.

The group comprises  Health NZ staff and external members from a multidisciplinary background and ensures that AI projects or research have been evaluated through different lenses. It meets monthly.

Any plans to develop or implement AI tools within Health New Zealand must be registered with NAIAEAG to ensure appropriate processes are followed and necessary support is provided. The group encourages input from individuals with relevant expertise or innovative ideas on the safe and effective use of AI to inform its investigations.

AI Checklist

NAIAEAG has developed an AI Checklist covering key questions relevant to the development, testing, and implementation of AI tools within Health NZ. These questions highlight areas that NAIAEAG will assess during the review process. Groups submitting proposals to NAIAEAG must provide written responses to these questions in the first instance. All proposals must be developed with and/or supported by Health NZ staff.
