Today, the Minister of Health announced a 10-year investment plan for digital infrastructure at Health New Zealand.
The Health Digital Investment Plan details how Health New Zealand will build a digitally enabled health system to meet demand and ensure reliable service access for New Zealanders.
It sets out a shift from our current state to a modern, unified and resilient digital health system, to be delivered in phases over the next decade.
This will ultimately benefit our patients and whānau through better access to care that is more streamlined and connected.
It will enable our clinicians to focus on what they do best, with a strong partnership approach between them and the teams developing our digital platforms.
The rollout of the plan starts with building foundational capabilities, strengthening core infrastructure, addressing digital risks, and enhancing our health system's digital maturity.
Subsequent investments will provide new digital tools for clinicians and new services for patients, as well as contribute to the long-term financial sustainability of New Zealand's health system.
Starting immediately, business cases will be produced and submitted for Cabinet approval and funding.
A new function will be created within Health New Zealand, named the Centre for Digital Modernisation of Health. The Centre will accelerate and drive the changes we are making.
