The B4 School Check: A Handbook for Practitioners

This Ministry of Health Handbook will guide clinicians through the standard protocols for each component of the B4 School Check. The protocols can be used for planning services, training nurses and vision and hearing technicians, and improving quality. The handbook also describes the clinical pathways and referral processes for the screening and surveillance aspects of the B4 School Check.

National Vision and Hearing Screening Protocols

These screening protocols have recently been updated and are for use by Vision Hearing Technicians (VHTs) and other health professionals who are part of the National Vision Hearing Screening Programme.

The B4 School Check is a free health and development check for r 4-year-olds. It’s the last Well Child Tamariki Ora check and helps give children the best start at school. Parents/guardians should take their child’s My Health Book to the check.
