Health New Zealand NETP (Nurse Entry to Practice), NESP (New Entry to Specialty Practice) and ENSIP (Enrolled Nurse Support into Practice) programmes are Nursing Council of New Zealand accredited and accommodate new graduates within hospital and primary health care settings.
This programme enables nursing graduates to begin their careers well-supported, safe, skilled and confident in their clinical practice, equipped for further learning and professional development, meeting the needs of health and disability support service users and employers.
The NESP programme supports nurses new to mental health, addiction and intellectual disability services (MHAIDS) to develop their professional practice while developing the specific skills required for the specialty field. We are committed to supporting new graduate nurses in their first year of practice.

Interviews will be held on-site at both Wellington Hospital and Hutt Hospital. Candidates will interview once for all positions across our District.
For Hutt Valley these interviews will be on the 30 September to 3 of October 2024. For Wellington these interviews will be on the 14-18 October 2024.

NETP placements are offered in Nelson and Blenheim for both secondary services and primary health. We try to place people according to their clinical interests.
- Secondary service placement areas include: Medical, surgical assessment treatment and rehabilitation, perioperative, emergency department, and radiology.
- Primary care placements areas include: Māori health provider, hospice, aged care and a mixed rural nursing experience at Murchison Community Hospital.
New graduates in the NETP programme start in late January. These are usually 12-month positions but occasionally a placement can be split into two six-month placements in two different clinical areas
Position description
NESP (nurse entry to specialist practice) programme provides a safe, supported environment in which a graduate nurse can transition to mental health nursing practice. The programme is approved by Nursing Council New Zealand and funded by Te Pou Mental Health Workforce Development (Te Pou).
We offer three NeSP positions each year, starting in late January for 12 months. Positions are based at Nelson Hospital's Wahi Oranga mental health unit and participants may also negotiate a community mental health or addictions services placement.

Nurse Entry to Practice (NETP) Programme
We have vacancies for graduate RNs in a range of settings. You will work in partnership with patients and their families/whānau using nursing knowledge, clinical judgement and professional attributes to assess health needs, provide care, and support people to manage their health. Participation in the Nursing Council of New Zealand–accredited MidCentral NETP Programme is pivotal in resourcing you to develop nursing competency. Programme information can be found in the NETP Programme Learning Framework and Handbook.
On completion of NETP, you will meet the competencies and standards of practice at competent level on the MidCentral Professional Development and Recognition programme (PDRP). You are supported with your career progression, and should you choose to commence a post-graduate study pathway in your second year of practice, you are prioritised to receive funding.

Entry to Specialist Practice (ESP) Programme - Mental Health
This programme is for new graduate and registered nurses entering mental health and addiction nursing. The programme combines theory, supported clinical experience, clinical preceptorship and supervision. Nurses on the New Entry to Specialist Practice (NESP): mental health and addiction nursing programme develop their professional practice and mental health and addiction nursing skills. Nurses receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Nursing.
New graduates or nurses new to mental health and addiction, employed by a Te Whatu Ora service or NGO mental health and addiction service, or in a mental health role in a PHO, can apply for this programme.

NETP has two intakes per year January and September; on average we have minimum 20+ per intake. Positions are vacancy based and are fixed term for 13 months.
Placements are generally offered at:
- Whangārei Hospital: Medical, Surgical, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Rehab, ED, theatre and ICU.
- District Hospitals: Dargaville, Bay of Island, Kaitaia (as positions become available)
Those employed in Primary Health will be offered a position on the NETP programme i.e. Aged Residential Care facilities, GP practices, PHO, Iwi providers.

Orientation

Orientation provides the graduate with generic learning and an introduction to the NETP and ENSIP programmes. Following orientation, graduates will be orientated to their clinical placement area by their Charge Nurse Managers and Preceptors. It is anticipated that graduates will complete clinical orientation within 4-6 weeks of starting their employment as a new graduate.
Clinical areas of employment

Graduates will be informed of their clinical placement before starting the programme. Within clinical areas graduates will be expected to complete generic online learning packages, orientation workbooks, IV competency, and study days additional to and as well as NETP/ENSIP study days and assignments.
Preceptor programme
- Graduates are supported in their clinical environment by a preceptor for the duration of their programme. As part of their professional development requirements all preceptors will have completed a preceptor workshop to support them in their role. Preceptors are also required to be working toward or completed proficient level on the Professional Development and Recognition Programme. For further information, refer to the Preceptorship page.
Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP)
- New graduates enter the PDRP as beginning practitioners however at the end of their programme, graduates will have demonstrated competent nursing practice - the next level on the PDRP. For more information regarding the PDRP please see the Professional Development Recognition Programme page.
